About the Jack Russell Terrier breed

Weight
About 5–6 kg
Coat
Smooth, rough or broken
Origin
England; further developed in Australia
Activity
High exercise and engagement needs

Origin

The Jack Russell Terrier was developed in 19th-century England by Reverend John Russell for hunting work. The breed was later developed further in Australia. It is shorter and more compact than the Parson Russell Terrier.

Temperament

The FCI describes the Jack Russell as lively, alert, active and courageous. Individual temperaments vary with upbringing and experience. Its working background can show in a strong interest in scents and movement.

Size

A small, agile dog with a slightly longer-than-tall outline. The FCI standard gives an ideal height of 25–30 cm and an approximate weight of 5–6 kg.

Grooming

The coat can be smooth, rough or broken. All three types need regular care, though the routine differs by coat and individual dog.

Activity

Jack Russells need daily exercise and mental engagement. Walks, training, scent games and play can help meet those needs; a short toilet break alone is unlikely to be enough.

Who this breed suits

This breed may suit someone who enjoys active walks and patient, consistent training. It can live in a flat if its exercise and rest needs are met. Ask about the individual dog's behaviour around children, other animals and time alone; breed alone cannot predict those things.
